We took refugee in objects,
a maternity of things.
It didn’t take much to disappear
so we performed the selves we had,
remembering all the places, the people, the words we loved and said,
but of things only, of objects past, all but materiality condensed.
The images we held, of things only,
but we did the best we could,
to take full grasp
of these few objects we thought as real.
Sometimes lost, or just forgotten,
we wanted them back, just to hold the memory of what it gave us,
that life it spurred, in the scrutiny of an infant,
of ourselves now forever gone.
Few memories embalmed,
few is what remains,
but we did the best we could,
to gain from those objects now too far.
Our lives aroused, once things recalled.
We gather stills, fragments,
a love of things, colonised by the silent protection
of the little we recall.
But we did the best we could,
from those possessions still, to remember what we once were.
